Vitamin D3 is also known as cholecalciferol. It is very important for our body. It plays a vital role in maintaining body functions and make our bones healthy. Vitamin D3 is the only vitamin that is produced by the human body itself when ultraviolet rays of sun strike to our skin then it produced vitamin d3 in our body. It is also known as the sunshine vitamin.
Vitamin D3 prevents our body from different diseases. It plays a major role in our overall health. The most important role of vitamin d is to maintain the calcium and phosphorus level in our body. It can use to treat the conditions where vitamin d levels may be low, such as in those people who have underactive parathyroid glands, low level of phosphate in blood, or hereditary conditions in which the body doesn’t respond to the parathyroid hormone. It also defends our body from several diseases like rickets and osteomalacia, both are caused due to the low level of vitamin d in our body. High blood pressure and cancer can also occur due to the low level of vitamin d in our body. Vitamin D3 encourages the kidneys to recycle phosphate back into the blood which helps the blood to stay at right pH.
Common Diseases due to Vitamin D3 Deficiency :
Two common diseases that cause due to vitamin D3 deficiency: Rickets and Osteomalacia.
Rickets is a disease that commonly affects children due to the vitamin d deficiency. It makes the bones soft and weak. It deforms the bones in children. You can see the children who have rickets, their legs are bow-shaped. Which is caused due to the low level of calcium and phosphorus as well as lack of vitamin d.
Osteomalacia is a disease that occurs in adults due to the vitamin d deficiency. It also weakens bones and muscles. Most of the people include elder or obese.
Vitamin D3 Side Effects :
Serious side effects of vitamin D3 :
- An allergic reaction to rash or itching.
- Severe dizziness.
- Swelling of the face, throat, and tongue.
- Trouble in breathing.
- Changes in heart rhythm or racing heartbeat.
Rare Side Effects:
Although it doesn’t happen very often, Vitamin D can cause :
- Dry mouth.
- A headache.
- Weakness and lack of energy.
Vitamin D3 Dosage :
You should not take more than 4000 IU a day of vitamin D3 unless your doctor tells you.
It’s good to take vitamin D with a meal. This may vary with the prescription form of vitamin D. So, talk to your doctor or pharmacist about what is better for you.
If you are osteoporosis patient and above than 50 years old, You should take 800 to 100 IU ( 20 TO 25 mcg ) a day of vitamin D with calcium.
For treating rickets in children, your doctor may tell you to give your child vitamin D anywhere between 12,000 and 50000 IU ( 0.3 to 12.5mg a day )
Vitamin D3 Overdose :
If you suspect an overdose, you should contact the doctor or emergency room immediately.
